Capital One Coders Experience
Computer

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise will be hosting a Capital One Coders Experience for middle school aged girls (grades 6-8) on Saturday, October 21, 2017. I have attached a flyer to share with teachers, parents and students.

This is an exciting opportunity to introduce some of our students to computer programming and teach them to develop their own app. Student are not required to have any previous coding experience to participate.

What is Coders Experience?

A free, one-day workshop where girls learn to create their own mobile app, hone

problem-solving skills and gain software development know-how!

Who Should Attend?

All girls in 6-8th grade in the state of Virginia who are interested in STEM are welcome to

attend! No previous experience with coding or technology is required to attend this event.

Why should I go?

Virginia is the first state in America to require computer science for all K-12 students beginning

fall 2017. As a result, we want to make sure our students are prepared and confident with basic

technology skills. Capital One, in partnership with the Virginia Secretary of Technology, has

created 10 Coders Experiences so that girls from every school district are able to attend.

What’s included in my registration?

Coders will receive breakfast, lunch, admission to all training sessions, and one-on-one help

from experienced and passionate Capital One mentors!

Program Benefits

By attending this program, you will:

• Learn how to code

• Partner with other girls that are interested in technology

• Creatively challenge yourself to design your own app

• Participate in a Hackfest competition

• Compete for a chance to win an all-expenses paid trip to the Women in Technology (WIT)

Experience in Richmond on November 15, 2017.

Who will teach the girls to code?

Since absolutely no coding experience is required, there will be plenty of mentors to help the

girls learn the basics. The mentors are Capital One associates who have plenty of experience

in all things technology!
